Lakewood St. Edward’s Wrestling Dynasty Continues with 35th State Title
COLUMBUS, Ohio - Lakewood St. Edward won its 35th wrestling state championship in school history at the 2022 OHSAA Wrestling State Tournament on Sunday night at Ohio State University’s Jerome Schottenstein Center. The Eagles edged state runner-up Perrysburg, 176-165.5, in a battle that was still up for grabs heading into the final day of the state tournament. It was the first time St. Edward returned to Ohio State’s campus since the 2020 OHSAA Dual Team Wrestling State Tournament where the Eagles won their fifth dual team wrestling championship. The COVID-19 pandemic cancelled the 2020 Individual Wrestling State Tournament, suspended the dual team wrestling state tournament, and shifted the 2021 Division I Wrestling State Tournament to be hosted at Hilliard Darby High School.
St. Edward totaled 11 state placers out of 14 weight classes. The Eagles had two state champions, two state runners-up and seven top-eight finishes in the tournament. St. Edward senior Evan Bennett took the top spot in the 165-pound weight class when he defeated Perrysburg junior Myles Takats by decision, 6-5. In the next weight class, 175-pounder and senior Luke Geog shut out Cincinnati La Salle senior Chase Stein, 10-0, to win first place.
The other Eagles in state championship round contention were state runners-up freshmen Adam Bennett and Jarrel Miller in their respective 106-pound and 157-pound weight classes. St. Edward had three wrestlers place fourth (126-pound sophomore Ryan Bennett; 215-pound junior Zachary Delsanter; and 285-pound junior Michael Kilbane), three wrestlers finish fifth (113-pound senior Wyatt Richter; 138-pound freshman Bradley Eaton, and 190-pound sophomore Jonny Slaper) and one wrestler take seventh place (120-pound sophomore Kade Brown).
Dublin Coffman senior Seth Shumate became the 71st three-time state champion in OHSAA wrestling state tournament history with his 7-4 victory by decision over Ashville Teays Valley senior Camden McDanel.
Division II
St. Paris Graham Local Runs Away with 21st-Consecutive State Wrestling Title
COLUMBUS, Ohio – St. Paris Graham Local continued its dominance in wrestling with the Falcons 21st-straight wrestling state championship at the 2022 OHSAA Wrestling State Tournament on Sunday night at Ohio State University’s Jerome Schottenstein Center. The win also marks Graham’s 23rd overall state wrestling state title in school history. Falcons outpaced state runner-up Aurora, 176-95.
It was the first time Graham returned to Ohio State’s campus since the 2020 OHSAA Dual Team Wrestling State Tournament where the Falcons were named state runners-up to dual team wrestling state champion, Louisville. The COVID-19 pandemic cancelled the 2020 Individual Wrestling State Tournament, suspended the dual team wrestling state tournament, and shifted the 2021 Division II Wrestling State Tournament to be hosted at Marengo Highland High School.
Graham totaled eight top-eight finishes in 14 weight classes. The Falcons had four state champions, two state runners-up, and two top-eight state placers. Graham started the championship round with sophomore Beric Jordan repeating as the 106-pound state champion when he pinned Ontario sophomore Jacob Ohl. Jordan also finished the 2021-22 season with a perfect 44-0 record while freshman Brogan Tucker defeated Millersburg West Holmes junior Mason Taylor, 7-1, for the 113-pound crown. The Falcons finished the night strong with back-to-back state champions in the final two weight classes. Sophomore Carter Neves took home the 215-pound championship over Columbus St. Francis DeSales sophomore Max Shulaw, 9-2. Senior Nolan Neves followed his brother’s performance with a 3-2 win against Maysvillle senior Gauge Samson to capture the 285-pound weight class.
Other Graham wrestlers in contention for a state championship were state runners-up 144-pound senior Nolan Gessler and 157-pound sophomore Gunner Cramblett. The Falcons also had freshman Luke James take fifth in the 165-pound weight class and senior Zack Burroughs finish sixth in the 175-pound weight class.
Division III
Xenia Legacy Christian Academy Repeats as Wrestling State Champions
COLUMBUS, Ohio- Xenia Legacy Christian Academy captured its second-straight wrestling state title at the 2022 OHSAA Wrestling State Tournament on Sunday night at Ohio State University’s Jerome Schottenstein Center. The Knights surpassed state runner-up Milan Edison, 136-78. Legacy Christian’s victory came after the COVID-19 pandemic shifted the 2021 Division III Wrestling State Tournament to be hosted at Marion Harding High School. The win was also the Knights’ second wrestling state title in school history.
Legacy Christian had seven state placers in 14 weight classes. The Knights had three state champions and four other top-eight finishes. Sophomore Dillon Campbell and seniors Camron Lacure and Gavin Brown repeated as the 120-pound, 138-pound and 150-pound weight class state champions, respectively. Dillon Campbell defeated Southington Chalker sophomore Landen Duncan with a fall at the 1:07 mark in the first period. Lacure beat Pemberville Eastwood senior Gavin Owens, 5-3. Brown became the 70th three-time state champion in OHSAA state wrestling tournament history with his 3-2 victory against Mechanicsburg senior Westyn Moyer.
The other Legacy Christian state placers were senior and 165-pounder Nick Alvarez taking third place, while sophomore Eli Campbell and senior Logan Attisano placed fourth in the 113-pound and 126-pound weight classes. Junior Boede Campbell finished eighth place in the 144-pound weight class.
